Privacy Policy
Somnest (“the app”, “we”, “us”) is built to need as little of your data as possible. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app does and does not collect, how it is used, and the choices you have. By using the app, you agree to this policy.
Information stored only on your device
Your sleep logs (bedtimes and wake times, your 1–10 sleep rating, the daily factors you tap such as caffeine, alcohol, exercise, work, and evening screens), along with your history, statistics, and alarm settings, are stored locally on your device only. This information is never uploaded to our servers, we cannot read it, and it is never included in analytics. Deleting the app removes this data from your device.
Bedroom photos (the AI bedroom check)
The bedroom check is optional. When you choose to run it, the app sends one photo of your room to our backend, where it is analyzed a single time by an AI model (Google's Gemini API, acting on our behalf) to describe your sleep environment, such as the level of light, visible screens, or clutter. The photo is processed in transit and is not stored on our servers beyond the moment of processing; we do not keep it, and it is not used to identify you or to build a profile of you. Please photograph your room rather than people. The analysis returns only general, non-medical observations about the room and abstract product categories that may help.
Information sent to generate suggestions
To return bedroom-check results and factor-based tips, the app sends a minimal, de-identified request to our backend (for example, the detected room findings or the factors you logged, plus your device locale). This is used solely to return suggestions and is not used to identify you or to build a profile of you.
Anonymous device identifier
To prevent abuse and apply fair rate limits, requests include an anonymous identifier derived from your device's vendor ID, together with an anonymous Firebase authentication token. This identifier is not linked to your name, email, or any personal account, and is not used for advertising. Reinstalling the app resets it.
Analytics and crash reporting
We use Google Firebase (Analytics and Crashlytics) to understand how the app is used in aggregate and to diagnose crashes, solely to improve reliability and the experience. These events are anonymized and are not linked to your identity.
No advertising, tracking, or microphone
We do not display ads in the app, and we do not sell your personal information. We do not track you across other companies' apps and websites, and the app does not use App Tracking Transparency identifiers. The app does not use your device's microphone.
Amazon Associates
Tapping a suggestion opens an Amazon search page in your browser that includes our affiliate tag. Anything you do on Amazon (browsing, signing in, or purchasing) is governed by Amazon's own privacy policy, not ours. As an Amazon Associate, we may earn a commission from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you.
Notifications
With your permission, the app uses local notifications on your device for sleep reminders and the alarm. You can grant or revoke this permission at any time in your device settings. Notifications are handled on-device and are not used to collect personal information.
Data retention
On-device data stays on your device until you delete it or remove the app. Bedroom photos are not retained after processing. De-identified suggestion requests and aggregated analytics data are retained only as long as needed for the purposes described above, and are then deleted or kept only in aggregate form.
Your choices
The bedroom check is optional, and you choose when to take a photo. You can decline or revoke notification permission, reset the anonymous identifier by reinstalling the app, and remove all on-device data by deleting the app. For any question or request about your data, contact us using the details below.
Children
The app is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date above reflects the latest version, and your continued use of the app after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.
